JIM TOMMANEY
Jim
Tommaney settled in South Beach in 1988 after a lifetime
in Manhattan. He helped spark the SoBe artistic
renaissance as a conceptual artist, with eight one-man
shows, primarily on Lincoln Road and in the Miami Art
& Design District, and with two shows in Manhattan.
On a pro
bono
basis, he set up thirty shows for other artists, and
promoted their work as an art critic for several local
publications.
In
April of 1995, Jim established EDGE Theatre on Espanola
Way in South Beach, and ran it until July. 2000, producing
fifty plays in the five-year period. A third of
these were by new playwrights, usually local, and an
additional third were South Florida premieres of works
by established playwrights, including Edward Albee and
Tennessee Williams. Jim has written seven full
length plays and four one-act plays, and has published
four books of poetry and three books of aphorisms.
His
most recent play, "Antonio" ran in SoBe in
Dec.-Jan. 2000, and was produced in an expanded version
in Ft. Lauderdale in May, and brought back in late June
for an encore weekend. It's been hailed
as the best in EDGE's five-year history, with critics
praising its "Shakespearean vigor" and its
"other-worldly sweetness". "Antonio"
is a most unusual love story of two bi-sexual men
and the women they love.
