HIBISCUS CAFETERIA Acrylic
on canvas, 48 x 48 inches (122 x 122 cm)
Private collection,
Germany Painted in Miami
Beach, 1998 |
2 other
paintings of coffee espresso machines and hibiscuses,
completed August
2000, for a collector in London. |
Story: You can see me painting it, in the street,
in front of a bush of hibiscuses, in the video clip
home page. I attempted to celebrate the melting
pot of Miami, that, if not really a harmonious one,
works like an espresso machine. All the parts are
necessarily well imbriquated and are to work, beautifully
I have to say, on top of a nice fire. In my daily
work at the studio, the expresso is my fuel, and
is know down here as "Miami Gasoline".
The availability of expresso, cafe conleche and
cortatido, and this wonderfully convivial Cafe Colada
(a plastic cup of syrupy expresso that goes along
4 or six miniatures cups in paper, and that is what
most of us have experimented as introductory tool
on any local job site) is what make at first the
Cuban community so likable. However, speaking of
"melting pot", the expresso machine as
painted here is of ... Italian origine.

Coffee
is not only Pierre Marcel's favorit fuel,
it is a recurrent theme in his work. Even
the students at the Pierre Marcel new art school in
France are invited to improvise on coffee :
