The
Flagler Monument, Miami
Beach Cleanup event of the Flagler Monument Island : http://www.ecomb.org/sitio2002/programslitter.htm
Posted by Paul Orofino on November 18, 2002:
As I write this, I
am looking out my window at the Flagler Monument from my home at
the Grand Flamingo. Thank you so much for your website! It has provided
me with the answers to so many questions I had. Perhaps you could
enlighten me with a project that I have undertaken, that being the
restoration of the Flagler Monument to its original beauty. As a
board member of ECOMB (Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach),
I am committed to bringing this dream to reality. All the members
of ECOMB are joining forces to get the necessary forces together
to make this work. As you may know, ECOMB and its volunteers visit
Flagler Memorial Island several times a year to clear it of litter.
Four weeks ago, 60 of us collected 120 large bags of litter and
removed it from the island by boat (with the help of the police
and coast guard). If you don't mind, I would like to forward you
some press releases re: this event. We are currently holding fund-raisers
to get money and donated services (electrical and masonry work)
and hope to begin restoration as soon as possible. It would be a
tremendous help to us if we could purchase a print of this beautiful
painting for the purpose of auctioning it off at our ECOMB holiday
party where we will be raising money to complete our project and
bring the monument to its former glory so that it once again reflects
the grandeur of the man for whom it was created. Any input from
you would be very deeply appreciated. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Paul Orofino

itself appears to be secure, the Flagler Memorial is in poor condition and in danger
