          Story:

I moved to Guerny in the early spring of 2000.  The landscape in Normandy was not the green splendor I had expected.  The plowing and seeding season had come to an end, and everywhere the hills were criss -crossed with scratchy brown wounds.  In this painting of my Gisancourt neighbor Francis' very old cider-apple tree, I indulged in a little optical play, which might not be obvious at first glance.  To make my point, should I have painted a tractor just finishing his last row?
