June is the time
when, in early morning, the gardens are the most tended to,
with meticulous care.
For the water pail paintings, I set up
my easel just in the center of a "jardin ouvrier" and
brought extreme attention to a row of lettuce.
"Jardins
ouvriers" are public patches of land, allotted to local citizens,
to grow vegetables - these days more for leisure than for necessity-
and where the gardeners compete for the biggest cabbage, the heaviest
eggplant or the smokiest Sunday barbecue. They were nice with me,
lending me a small wood shack to shelter the paint material at night.
